To begin with the fabric was woven with the intention of making shirts. However,Niime discovered the fabric was not suitable for shirts. She decided to use her original fabric to create shawls. Her Fabric was perfect for making shawls that go well with many manners of dress and are suitable for everyone, regardless of age, gender,or nationality.

Niime reflected on the materials we use for our works. Since then we began growing our own organic cotton. The cotton tree blooms, bears fruit and becomes cotton. The harvest season is from autumn to winter and is done by hand. The work is labour intensive and however we feel it adds to the value and beauty of our fabrics. Just as making good choices about what we eat improves our lives,we feel that making good choices about what we wear benefits us.

In common cotton production plants must be replanted each year. The Ceiba speciousa or silk floss tree does not require replanting each year. However,it takes 10-20years before its cotton can be harvested. In 2015 we planted this species of tree with the hope that it will bear cotton in the future. This will depend on the climate of Nishiwaki city. One day we hope we can create works that can truly bear the label of “Made in Nishiwaki”.

The Banshu style of weaving was born out of a need for locals to make their own clothes. They made clothes that they personally enjoyed, clothes that were comfortable and practical. tamaki niime have been continuing this tradition. We not only hope to preserve the tradition of Banshu style weaving but create a new style of Banshu weaving. Then we will continue making people happy for many years to come.
