The Oita Beppu Bamboo Craft is well known for its use of green bamboo logs, but it is also common to use Sarashi-Dake or white bamboo which is roasted to remove bamboo oil and dried under the sun.
This basket uses white bamboo which is stripped into thin sticks and woven into a basket.
White bamboo craft, unlike green bamboo, is known to match not only Japanese but western foods as well.
The sticks are woven closely together in a simple Goza pattern.
The borders are created by wrapping wicker delicately over the bamboo.
This bread basket is meant to carry bread and sandwiches, but can also be used to hold Onigiri and other foods as well as small items and cutlery.
